Our Team and Design Philosophy
Kociolek Design Studio is led by Kryz and Emily Kociolek. A husband and wife team with over 25 years of combined architecture experience. No matter what project we’re designing, we always aim to make a difference in the built environment. We strongly believe that Architecture should be accessible to everyone. No matter how grand of a vision our clients have or how trivial the project might seem, we envision spaces that will inspire people, help them connect with one another, and enrich the human experience. We do this by embracing the life, love, and diversity of the urban, suburban, and rural environments. We bring a wide range of personal experiences and design sensibility resulting from having spent parts of our lives in Europe, the Pacific Northwest, rural Illinois, New York City, the East Coast and suburban Chicagoland. Emily Kociolek
Project Manager / Designer
Emily Kociolek is the co-founder of Kociolek Design Studio LTD. Emily began designing houses from a young age, and decided to be an architect by the time she was 10. While earning her undergraduate architecture degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign she spent a formative year studying abroad in Versailles, France. She went on to earn her Master of Architecture from the University of Oregon, Portland.
While her career has taken Emily from working in firms from New York City to Portland, OR and Chicago, she has continually focused on primarily residential architecture. She excels at helping her clients design spaces to enhance the way they live.
Kryz Kociolek
Architect
Kryz is the co-founder of Kociolek Design Studio LTD. He was born in Poland but has spent all of his adult life living and working in the United States. After completing his undergraduate architecture degree at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he went on to obtain a Master of Architecture degree from Columbia University in New York City. Kryz has worked for numerous design firms since then, including Robert A.M. Stern Architects in New York and HOK Architecture in Chicago.
For the last 9 years, Kryz has been employed as a building inspector and plan reviewer for various municipalities in the Chicagoland. Currently he is the Chief Building Official for the Village of Mokena, IL. During those years, Kryz was able to start his private architecture practice, and expand it into Kociolek Design Studio. He is a licensed architect in the State of Illinois, an ICC certified Residential Plans Examiner, and an ICC certified Commercial Building Inspector.
