Contemporary Single-Family Residence "Sauk Trail"

2016 - Frankfort, IL

What happens when two architects design a house for two architects in the suburbs?  "Contemporary Suburbia"  The design includes a typical 4-bedroom, 3-car garage, 2-story house with a contemporary design language.  Cool gray horizontal lap siding serves as a backdrop to bright warm cedar tones comprising the vertical elements.  The roof takes the idea of typical gable shape, which is then pulled apart and deconstructed resulting in layered shed roofs.  The contemporary look is enhanced by standing seam metal roof, horizontal band of gray brick, and numerous windows with upper and lower transom lights.

The interior layout is organized around a central interior "courtyard" stair connecting the two stories resulting in the ultimate open concept plan.  The more formal downstairs great room is counterbalanced by the large informal "studio" room upstairs.  The upstairs studio is meant to serve as the family free play and crafting space.

Additionally, the program includes a home office that doubles as a guest bedroom with close proximity to a guest bathroom and the front door.  A second home office is located in the rear of the house with direct access to the garage, intended for more "workshop" oriented home occupations.

The kids' bedrooms have playful extras such as elevated hang-out lofts above closets, and a secret connecting attic tunnel between the two bedrooms.

Compact yet spacious, with contemporary touches througout.
